Let's get real folks!
How many times do you think the average Forest Hills/Queens resident will have a need to purchase something from one of these stores? These 3 in particular hardly do a thriving business in Manhattan/LI which is why they have recently closed and consolidated some of them. They will not dare open in FH-- there is not enough foot traffic, nor demand; jeez- they would not even take spots in Queens Center or Atlas.
Go on line and order your candles, containers, and napkin rings.
Also, there is talk that Barnes and Noble may size-down its headquarters on Austin in 2009 and keep just one floor. Again- not enough foot traffic. This is a very telling sign of why Austin Street is in a tailspin.

Although it's a sure thing that some stores are being vacated and we've all heard rumors as to others, the fact is that what we don't know, for the most part, is whether the landlord(s) already have deals in place or are negotiating new deals for these spaces. In the approximately 10 years I've worked in an office on Austin Street, at least 1/2, maybe more of my office's landlord's commercial space has changed tenants, generally for the better. Most properties don't sit empty for a horrendously long period of time. Just one example--it seems the Wine Gallery closed only recently, and that renovations for the new occupant have already begun. Change, for better or for worse, is upon us, but I don't believe for a minute that there will be a glut of empty stores on or near Austin Street.

I understand that leases expire and landlords then increase the rents to market rates which forces out some tenants, but all this turnover doesn't sit well with me. Looks like there will be 5 or 6 empty stores in the next few months. Wld you want to buy a home in FoHi if you walked down Austin and saw a bunch of empty storefronts.

I heard from one of the retailers that Men's Warehouse and also Strawberry are leaving soon. Not sure if it's rumor or some sort of "inside" info.

A few suggestions for some of the spaces...
--Container Store
--Crate & Barrel
--Sur La Table

We have nothing like any of these stores in the area...All have goods with reasonable price points, but not "cheap" merchandise...
